Friday was the much anticipated Okinawa District Science Fair for the middle school and Cannon's project helped represent Lester Middle School. Cannon did an amazing job with his project this year, "Kill Rates of Bacteria with Phenol: A Scientific Look". Like last year, he worked closely with the pathology lab at the hospital to run his experiment. He worked with two types of bacteria to see which concentration of phenol (carbolic acid) would completely kill them.
Unfortunately and disappointingly, the science fair here is not a well run event, in my esteemed opinion. I could vent my true feelings, but I've already done that in a letter to the district superintendent. Suffice it to say that the event had direly under-qualified judges so the end result was that Cannon placed 3rd for the 6th grade, losing to a girl who tested magnets on radish seeds (
really???). Now third place is not bad, but we knew Cannon's project was tops (and that's not just a proud momma talking!) There was also a glaring mistake which marred his victory - namely, he's in the 7th grade, not the 6th!!! The silly director of the fair took it upon herself to change his category. I am not her biggest fan and that's all I have to say about that.
Anyways, we know that Cannon had an award winning project and we're so proud of him for the work he did!
